Not everyone wants a responsive or mobile website. Not everyone needs one. But we are in 2014; the number of people browsing the web on mobile devices is ever increasing with the popularity of tablets such as the iPad and smartphones. So the question we pose is: Would your website benefit from a mobile website or being responsive?

Let me just clarify the difference between a mobile website and a responsive website.

A mobile website tends to be placed on a separate domain to your main website, and will be a compact version of your main website, often with fewer pages than its bigger sibling. You can tell a mobile website generally by looking at the URL of the site. They tend to be on domains such as rather than

A responsive website is built so that it adapts to the device it is being used on, staying on the same domain at all times. I am a firm believer that with the number of mobile users increasing daily, all websites should be responsive. That’s just my view though; obviously cost can dictate matters as these types of website tend to cost more than a regular website.

So, why is it important? Well apart from the fact that the number of people looking at websites on mobile devices is increasing daily, responsive websites look much, much better when viewed on mobile devices.

A full website on a mobile will be cramped into the devices screen and users will have to pinch to zoom in, zoom out, looking for what they want. A responsive site is designed so users don’t need to zoom at all. All of the content is still there, and the size of fonts, menus, images etc. get scaled and re-arranged depending upon the device being used.

So the ultimate benefit of a responsive website is user experience whilst using your site, as well as catering for the ever-increasing number of mobile users.
